Most of us have a love/hate relationship with makeup. While it helps us appear flawless, makeup is really expensive, time-consuming, and sometimes messy. If you’re not careful, makeup products can take over your life (and your bathroom countertop). Do you want to get more organized with your makeup? Here are 12 tips you can use to help:
Throw Away What You Don’t Use
How much makeup do you own that you don’t use? Probably a lot, right? Get rid of it! Why keep your vanity filled with products you don’t want? Seems like a huge waste of space! Go through your makeup and immediately throw away anything you don’t use — eyeshadow that’s gone out of style, lipstick you hate, etc. Ask yourself one very simple question, “When’s the last time I used this?” If the answer is, “I can’t remember.” Trash it.
Spice Rack It
Spice racks aren’t just for your kitchen, you can use them in your bathroom too. If you have a ton of different perfumes or products in small jars, consider placing them on your spice rack instead of in your drawers. That’ll definitely help transform your bathroom space and keep you organized.
Don’t Let Storage Fool You
If you’re going to use storage containers for your makeup, pick items that are clear. That way, you’ll be able to see what’s inside of each one without opening and closing and creating more of a mess. If your storage units aren’t clear, then use labels to keep things organized. Trust me. This hack will save you a ton of time!
Color Coordinate Your Lipsticks
Do you ever get tired of searching for one specific lipstick in a sea of lipsticks? Then you’re going to love this hack. When you store your lipsticks together, make sure you store them with the color tag facing up. You’ll be able to see the color of each lipstick way easier without making a mess!
Give Yourself Space To Breathe
One of the reasons why it’s so important to be organized is so you don’t feel stressed and overwhelmed. Having makeup all over your bathroom, and bedroom, is going to make you stressed (it makes me stressed)! Make sure you have space to not only breathe but actually tend to your face properly.
Look For Natural Light
A lot of people don’t even do their makeup in their bathroom. Why? Because there’s typically no natural light in there! Unless you have a large window, you’re simply relying on artificial light to help you look good. And honestly, artificial light is deceiving. To truly know what you look like, you need natural light. Find it!
Make Sure You Have A Toiletry Bag
Hopefully, you’re past the age of just throwing miscellaneous things in your suitcase before you leave for a trip. If not, you might want to work on that. Investing in a makeup bag will help! I don’t recommend leaving your makeup in the bag when you’re home, though. You don’t want bacteria to build up in there. Strictly use it for when you’re traveling and make sure to clean the bag often.
Use A Vase Or Jar For Your Brushes
There’s nothing I find more infuriating than makeup brushes laying on bathroom vanities. Those brushes go on your face — you have to be careful with where you’re placing them. I recommend avoiding makeup bags and using a vase or a jar to store your brushes. Not only will that help keep your brushes from unwanted bacterial contact, but it’ll also look stylish.
Invest In A Magnetic Board
Magnetic makeup boards are a perfect way to stay organized. All you have to do is put them on your bathroom wall and stick your products to it. You can find a board in your style and color so it doesn’t take away from the decor in your bathroom. So easy!
Show The Pretty, Hide The Ugly
If you have multiple bathrooms in your home, this one might not matter too much. But if you have one bathroom, and guests come over, you’re going to want to keep your vanity pretty clean. Show the pretty, hide the ugly! All of your nice lotions, soaps, and even some perfumes can be on display. Everything else? Hide it!
Be As Minimal As Possible
You probably only use a few key makeup essentials, right? So then why do you have so many products? Because you love shopping for makeup! We all do! Instead of sticking to one foundation, you buy multiple foundations in an attempt to find the best one for your skin. I get it. But once you find a solid foundation, try sticking to it. The same goes for every product. That way, you won’t have 10 different blushes and 5 different mascaras.
Make Sure Everything Has A Designated Spot
The key to being organized is having designated places for everything — and actually sticking to those assigned spots. If you have your perfume on a shelf, make sure to always have it there. Even when you use it, put it back ASAP. Don’t wait until the end of the day to put all of your makeup back in its special spot. Odds are, you’ll be too tired to do it then.
