A french manicure is a classic, go-to nail style that is elegant and versatile. Not only does it match everything, but it also has a timeless and subtle aesthetic perfect for any occasion. Though there are variations on it, the typical French manicure consists of a pale pink base and white tips.
You can get a french manicure from the comfort of your own home, without even having to step foot in the nail salon! Just follow these simple steps.
Clean, Trim, And Soak Nails
You need to start with a clean base, which requires a bit of maintenance. Take off any existing nail polish, then cut and file your nails to your desired shape and length. For the sake of the french manicure, the longer the nail, the better.
Soak your fingers in warm water for a couple minutes. Then, using an orangewood stick or similar tool, push cuticles back. This is also the time to remove any dirt or build-up from underneath and around your nail beds.
While you may be eager to get started with the painting portion of the manicure, don’t rush through the prep process. The prep helps ensure your manicure lasts as long as possible. Plus, with the base being pale pink, your natural nails will still be a bit visible, so you want them to be clean.
Begin With The Base
Once you prep your nails, it’s time to start painting. Paint a thin layer of pale pink polish. For smooth application, start with the middle of the nail first, stroking from the bottom of the nail to the tip. Repeat on either side until the entire nail is covered. Use quick, light strokes. Wait a few minutes before applying another thin second layer.
Applying The Tips
If you’re new to French manicures or don’t have very long nails, considering using nail guides to apply the bright white polish. Either way, make sure your base coat is completely dry before beginning. Paint the white in an upside-down U, following the natural shape of the tip of the nail. Start at the left end of the nail tip and bring it, in one stroke, to the center. Repeat on the other side, making the two white strips meet. The white tip should take up about ¼ of the total nail.
Finish With Top Coat
Once the white polish dries (and you remove the nail guides), it’s time for the top coat. You can either use a very pale pink polish (which will help tone down the bright white) or a transparent, clear coat. The top coat is what seals the manicure together and prevents chipping.
